Yeovil is a manufacturing town rather than a market town with an estate attached, and the difference shows in the buildings. Lynx and Houndstone trading estates carry substantial industrial floor area, and the aviation industry has left large-span production and hangar-type structures in and around the town that dwarf ordinary commercial sheds.

Buildings at that scale change the maintenance question. A roof measured in acres cannot be walked in an afternoon, its gutter runs are long enough that a fall is marginal by the time it reaches the outlet, and the number of penetrations, plant items and roof lights runs into the hundreds rather than the dozens.

With less prolonged wetting, organic growth and corrosion progress more slowly, and the failures that dominate on the wet western sites are less pressing. What replaces them is wear: coatings ageing in sunlight, sealant hardening, thermal movement working at joints over years, and the slow degradation of roof light sheeting under ultraviolet exposure.

The open ridges south of the town do catch the wind, and hamstone weathers softly over time, so the older buildings in the centre have their own pattern again. But for the industrial stock the real priority list here is different from the one at Okehampton or Tavistock, and a report that ignored that would be a template rather than an inspection.

On very large roofs the gutter is usually where the money is. A long run with a shallow fall silts progressively from the far end, and by the time water is standing in it the fall is effectively gone across a third of its length.

Photographed from directly above, the silt line and the standing water are both obvious, and their extent can be measured against the previous year's images. That is a maintenance decision made on evidence rather than on a contractor's estimate from the ground.

The town also carries a substantial retail, hospital and education estate, and a portfolio here frequently mixes those with the industrial stock. That mix is worth planning for, because a hospital or school roof carries far more plant per square metre than a warehouse and its failures affect an operation that cannot simply close for a morning. Recording those buildings out of hours or during a holiday period is straightforward from the air, which is a good deal harder to arrange when the inspection involves people on the roof.
